With a budget of under 2000, prioritize domestic South American-sourced or domestic Australian-sourced mixed batches. Reliable domestic brands for 500 mL are currently mostly around one thousand yuan, and imported Australian-sourced products rarely come down to this price unless they are near expiry or specially approved. For culturing HEK293T and HeLa, domestic mid-to-high-end lines are basically sufficient, and we have not observed significant differences in passaging, adherence, or transfection on our end. You can contact regional distributors to apply for a 50 mL or 100 mL trial; many brands have trial policies, but make sure the trial sample and bulk shipment are from the same lot number.

I don't just look at low e-commerce prices for brands; I pay more attention to whether they have their own traceability system and stable South American blood collection channels. I can take small packages of 2-3 brands at the same time and run 3 passages for comparison. The domestic lines of South American origin that our group has used showed stable states in 293T and HeLa, and no obvious issues were found in protein expression or blank culture controls. The key is still whether the supplier can provide complete testing reports for each batch, proof of origin, and after-sales response. Cost-effectiveness is not just the unit price; it is necessary to calculate batch-to-batch consistency, delivery stability, and the speed of handling after problems arise.

A 50 mL trial size is enough for two parallel batches, but you need to check all the indicators. First, ask the supplier to provide the endotoxin, hemoglobin, pH, osmolality, and total protein data for that lot, and only proceed to cell testing if they pass. With HEK293T, we will measure viability and transfection efficiency over 3 days; with HeLa, we will check morphology, doubling time, and status across 3 consecutive passages. If the trial works well, be sure to require lot number locking and retain samples when purchasing in bulk. Do not focus only on a price under 2,000 yuan; some low-priced sera have elevated osmolality or endotoxin, which only become apparent after continuous passaging.
