If your work mainly involves tumor cell lines, you can try domestic or Australian fetal bovine serum, as these cells are less sensitive than primary cells and stem cells. It is recommended to first request trial samples from 2–3 brands through distributors, and test at least two or three cell lines per brand, looking at doubling time, adherent morphology, and post-passage viability. Domestic brands such as ExCell Bio, ExCell, and Si Ji Qing have had more stable supply than South American serum in recent years, but cell lines vary across laboratories, so you cannot rely on brand alone. After confirming a replaceable lot, switch gradually rather than replacing everything at once.

When comparing cost-effectiveness, don't just look at the unit price per 500 mL. You need to calculate the cost per milliliter of complete culture medium, delivery lead time, batch-to-batch consistency, and after-sales support. Some brands are cheaper but have high endotoxin levels or large batch-to-batch variation, causing fluctuations in cell status and making repeated experiments more expensive. You can ask the supplier for a CoA and focus on endotoxin, hemoglobin, total protein, sterility, and mycoplasma testing. You can also run a small-sample test and compare using the same cell line. As for pricing, there are currently large differences across regions and distributors. I usually request quotes from several suppliers, and signing an annual price agreement is more stable.

If the budget is limited, you can pool orders with other laboratories in the hospital or seek centralized negotiations through university/hospital procurement platforms. Domestic fetal bovine serum has improved in recent years in terms of manufacturing processes and is sufficient for most tumor cell lines, but caution may be needed for primary cells. It is recommended to first purchase a small quantity of 1–2 bottles for trial use to verify cell morphology and key markers; if the trial passes, then sign a six-month to one-year framework agreement requiring price locking and priority supply. Do not stockpile a large number of unverified lots all at once just because of shortages, as the risk is relatively high.

Regarding lead times, the current shortage of South American blood sources is an industry-wide issue, so it is advisable not to focus on only one brand. Look for regional master distributors or factory-direct sales, and clarify whether the goods are in stock in a domestic bonded warehouse or need to be transferred from overseas, and whether the lead time includes customs clearance and cold chain. Inquire about prices from multiple brands at the same time to get more realistic arrival times. Generally, domestic or Australian brands with local inventory have lead times within 1-2 weeks; South American brands may take more than three weeks. You can ask the distributor to sign a stocking agreement specifying a fixed monthly quota, so that supply will not be temporarily cut off due to price increases.

I suggest tiering your cells: continue using the previously validated South American batches for primary cells and critical experiments, and don't switch them lightly; for tumor cell lines and tool cells, you can use domestic/Australian alternatives. This way, even if South American serum is out of stock, you still have a second serum option available. Our lab currently uses two systems: locked batches for primary cells and domestic serum for tumor cells, which has also reduced costs slightly. Before switching, you must perform parallel passaging and observe for more than 10 passages; don't draw conclusions after just one round of testing.
