The global ranking of biological reagent companies reflects more on the overall sales, total literature, or financing scale of the company, and has limited reference value for antibody single products. Our laboratory rarely selects primary antibodies directly based on company rankings. Instead, we first focus on the target protein, application, and species to see if colleagues have published real-life images in WB or IHC. Even the top ranked large companies may not be able to produce antibodies with bands, while small brands may have higher cost-effectiveness if a certain clone number is cited in multiple articles and the batch is stable. So it is recommended to use the ranking as a preliminary list, and before making actual payments, the focus should still be on specific product references and manufacturer application data.

In actual procurement, no matter how highly ranked the brand is, it is best to first request a trial sample or the smallest size to validate a new antibody. For the first use, it is recommended to set up both positive and negative controls and run WB in parallel with an existing known antibody. For IHC, a concentration gradient should also be performed to avoid excessive background or false positives. If the antibody has at least two or three publications using the same application and same species, the risk will be somewhat lower. After validation is successful, then discuss with the distributor to reserve the same lot number. Small-volume users should stock up enough for the entire experimental cycle in one purchase to reduce subsequent lot-to-lot variability.

Batch stability and delivery speed are two factors that rankings cannot reflect. We once bought an antibody that ranked very high but had no domestic stock, and it took two months to ship from overseas, halting all our experiments. After that, we learned to prioritize asking distributors whether they have domestic stock, bonded warehouses, and whether they can lock lot numbers. For batch stability, you can request a COA to check titer, purity, and expiration date; it is best to run a parallel comparison between old and new lots before switching. For small-volume users like you who use only tens of microliters each time, choosing a brand with domestic sub-warehouses and local technical support will be more worry-free, even if it is not in the top ten.

For a small number of WB and IHC users, it is recommended to first lock in the clone account instead of checking the brand ranking. The performance of different clones on WB and IHC may differ significantly for the same target protein, and the ranking only tells you the size of the company, not which clone is suitable for your tissue sample. Our process is to first search literature to identify several clone numbers, then turn around to see which suppliers have stock, and then compare prices and delivery times. The same clone can sometimes be found in Abcam, CST, Santa Cruz, and even domestic packaging, with similar quality but significantly different prices and delivery speeds.
